Popped over to the beautiful Turks and Caicos islands of the Caribbean to spend a week with fabulous people! The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory consisting of the larger Caicos Islands and smaller Turks Islands, two groups of tropical islands in the Lucayan Archipelago of the Atlantic Ocean and northern West Indies. They are known primarily for tourism and as an offshore financial centre. Its largest city is Providenciales a.k.a Provo and it’s capital is Cockburn Town.
Visiting TCI was my first trip to the Caribbean and words can’t describe how gorgeous the Caribbean ocean is! I boarded a plane in Miami and after a short flight, arrived and With a Nigerian passport and NO visa, I had been very worried that I might get turned back but I needn’t have. Having a resident vouch for me was all they needed and I was waved through to walk out of the charmingly tiny airport.
I had been very curious to see how “the people looked” and was happy to see most were just like me. As of 2020, the ethnic representation in TCI stands at 88% Afro-Caribbean, 8% Caucasian, 4% mixed and East Indian. They drive on the left (former British colony), use the USD and things are pretty expensive. Fresh seafoods are almost a must in every meal and I was delighted to savor their local foods at the best haunts. Conch is the key seafood and it’s eaten with many dishes: Conch and grits, crack conch, Conch fritters, Conch and fries, in soups, chowder, etc. Smokey’s is a nice spot for the locals.
During the snorkeling boat ride, the boat driver caught some fresh conch from the sea, opened it up, marinated the flesh in lime, cilantro etc and made a conch ceviche which we ate raw. See video below! I actually really liked it and would eat it again!
Blooper Alert! One mistake I made was in assuming that going to the Caribbean on vacation equates to only small shorts and light tops. I swallowed my shyness and squeezed all the skimpy shorts from my fashion line into my one piece of luggage, my carryon. Alas, from the moment I landed till I left, I stuck out like a sore thumb! I was mortified to see that the locals were NOT wearing little shorts and asides swimwear by the beach, no one else was showing all that leg. I felt self-conscious and so shy😄. Was I over-thinking it?
It was fun hanging with Tundee Saunders, mom-daughter duo Melissa and Anne de la Durantaye, Umo Umoh, Sarah Lesage and many more who were great sports and took time off to show me around Providenciales! As soon as you can, get tix, pack your bags and go there. Here’s a taste of more fun stuff to do there.
Enjoy the video!
