I recently had the privilege of visiting 3 Caribbean islands within a few weeks and can I just start by saying, “I LOVE them all!!!” ❤️❤️❤️This post shares some tips and pictures from my Barbados trip. (Barbados, Home of Rihanna!) In the words of news casters, “Here are the highlights”. 🤗
We landed at BGI – Bridgetown Grantley Adams Intl airport via Caribbean airlines (fabulous airline holding true to the belief that comfort and space are essential components of customer satisfaction!). Beautiful airport 👇🏽
*I will go into details on Barbados’ Amenities and Infrastructure in my upcoming series so follow me and stay tuned.* Suffice it to say, for a little island with an estimated population of less than 300,000, this is a beautiful airport, solid and yet VERY practical. Functional yet an aesthetic delight!
We picked a cab and went to our hotel, the Yellow Bird, (review coming later) right on St Lawrence Gap. TIP: If you want to have easy access to the beach, restaurants, street food, clubs and the wild Bajan nightlife, St Lawrence Gap is the best spot to lodge. Down-to-earth folk everywhere and lots of everything to choose from.
The popular Sharkey’s is one spot with some really yummy dishes and is famous for its cocktails! 👇🏽
Note that Barbados is quite expensive. The exchange rate is 1 US dollar to 2 Bajan dollar but …. TIP: if you haven’t had time to forex-ting, everyone gladly accepts UsD!
Re: the award-winning Yellow Bird, I prefer patronizing intimate family-owned non-chain hotels with good reviews. Overall, I’d give YB a 4/5… Okay, enough of the serious stuff, let’s take a look at the ocean-views from our room..👇🏽
For breakfast, we were all itching to sample the local cuisine. I had the Bajan Platter which had eggs, plantain fritters, and a lot of other Bajan delicacies. I was too hungry to remember to take pics but it was super-good! The restaurant downstairs is attached to the YB hotel which makes it super convenient. 👇🏽
There’s a lovely little beach right by the YB. It doesn’t have loungers or seating right on the shore, so it’s better for romantic walks by moonlight and probably for night mischief, 😄I wouldn’t recommend it for daytime family relaxation. However we had a good start playing around in the lovely water, literally getting our feet wet before walking to the corner to catch the minibus to Accra Beach (aka Rockley Beach).
The transportation system in the city is great. We took a minibus 👇🏽 (just like the “danfo” used all over Nigeria/Africa😀) which cost only $1-$2 per adult.
Accra Beach is an okay beach for whatever you’d like your beach outing to be even if you’re #travelingwithkids . Sea conditions vary, but often there’s some surf – good for jumping around in, or riding on and there are boogie boards to rent. The water stays shallow a long way out, making it a great beach for families with young children. Otherwise, you could hang out in the shade of the casuarinas and sea grapes at the rear of the beach, browse the beachwear stalls, sunbathe (there are loungers to rent), or stroll along the south coast boardwalk, which starts at the beach’s western end.
One activity I ALWAYS recommend is patronizing at least one of the “touristy” tours. It’s a great way to learn much within a short time, from people who actually know what they’re talking about. I love doing tours especially when I’m on a short trip. In Barbados, we used a tour company and got a comprehensive tour of all Barbados starting from Christ Church Parish (which is the southernmost tip), going as far as St. Lucy s Parish (which is the northernmost tip) then looping back home via Speightstown and the bourgeois areas. The itinerary was uniquely crafted to take us through all 11 parishes of Barbados!
My favorite tour highlights were:
-Seeing the Rural areas of Barbados, sugarcane plantations and the gullies
-Barbados Wildlife Reserve in St. Peter Parish on the Northern Coast
-North Point by the Animal Flower Cave
Follow me to catch my next post where I’ll cover the Barbados Tour in detail with pictures! 🤗🤗
